Why Playtime in Schools Matters More Than Ever

Playtime isn’t just about giving kids a break—it’s a crucial part of their development. A recent report by the Raising the Nation Play Commission, in partnership with the Centre for Young Lives, is calling on Ofsted to start assessing schools on the amount of playtime they provide. The goal? To make sure children get the chance to play, socialize, and recharge during the school day.

The Decline of Playtime

Over the past 25 years, children have lost nearly two hours of playtime per week at school. For kids in disadvantaged areas, this is even more worrying, as many don’t have safe spaces to play outside of school. For some, that 15-minute break might be the only real time they get to run around, chat with friends, and just be kids.

Why Play is Essential

Play isn’t just fun—it’s fundamental. It helps children build friendships, develop problem-solving skills, and even improve their mental health. Research has also linked regular play with better physical health and reduced stress. The Children’s Alliance even calls play a “simple, inexpensive, and joyful” way to tackle rising childhood obesity and mental health struggles.

What Schools Can Do

To make play a priority, the report suggests schools should:

• Make Time for Play – Give children more opportunities for unstructured play during the school day.
• Improve Play Spaces – Ensure there are safe and engaging areas where kids can be active and creative.
• Value Play as Learning – See play as part of a child’s education, not just a break from it.
